MULTIPLE-NEGATIVE COMPOSITE PRINTS

This gallery is a sampling of Cinquanta's original fine-art photography printed in the darkroom in the late 1980's before the release of digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop. After printing, she toned and hand-colored her prints using photographic oils. Because these images were created by combining more than one negative, each is one-of-a-kind. Karla mastered this complex process that only few photographers practiced back then, as it painstakingly involved isolating and combining details of several negatives through a "burning & dodging" technique using a darkroom enlarger. Today, surrealism in photography is more easily achieved through Adobe Photoshop digital imaging software.
